Antonelli Eyes Coronation in Texas as Ferrari Fights to Keep the Title Alive
The Stakes at COTA
With five rounds remaining and a commanding 45-point cushion, Andrea Kimi Antonelli arrives at the Circuit of The Americas on the cusp of one of the most remarkable rookie championship campaigns in Formula 1 history. Six wins, a Mercedes machine that has rediscovered its dominant swagger, and a maturity beyond his years — the young Italian is turning heads and rewriting expectations.
But Austin has a habit of shaking things up. This is Round 19 of 24, and Ferrari, sitting second in the Constructors' fight, knows that momentum matters. For Lewis Hamilton — a five-time COTA winner and a man who knows this tarmac like an old friend — this weekend is personal. If the Scuderia want to keep even a flicker of the drivers' title hope alive, Texas is where the fightback has to begin.
A Circuit That Demands Everything
COTA is a driver's playground and an engineer's headache. The lap opens with the brutal uphill sprint into the blind Turn 1 — one of the best overtaking spots on the calendar and a frequent site of first-lap chaos. From there, the flowing esses of the Turns 3–6 sequence, inspired by Silverstone's Maggotts-Becketts, reward aerodynamic balance and driver commitment.
The long back straight into the tight Turn 12 hairpin is the second major passing zone, ideal for DRS-assisted lunges. Tyre management is a genuine strategy variable here: the abrasive surface and combination of high-speed and slow-speed corners punish the rears, and bumps left over from Texas's shifting subsoil add another layer of unpredictability. Expect a two-stop to be the strategic sweet spot, though teams will be watching degradation closely.
Form Guide
Mercedes are the class of the field. Antonelli's 204 points tell the story, but George Russell's own two wins mean the Silver Arrows have a genuine one-two threat every weekend — 358 constructors' points is a statement of intent.
Ferrari are the best of the rest, with Hamilton comfortably clear of teammate Charles Leclerc. Hamilton's 159 points and single win suggest a season of consolidation rather than glory, but COTA has always brought out his best.
McLaren, meanwhile, are the disappointment of 2026. Lando Norris sits fifth with zero wins — a stunning fall from grace given the team's recent pedigree. Third in the constructors' is respectable, but the papaya squad needs more.
Key Battles to Watch
The intra-Mercedes dynamic is the subplot of the season. Antonelli leads Russell by 50 points, and while team orders may loom if the title tightens, expect the veteran Russell to push his prodigious teammate hard on a track that rewards experience.
At Ferrari, the Hamilton-Leclerc battle simmers. Hamilton holds a 33-point advantage, but Leclerc's raw qualifying pace remains a threat. And keep an eye on Red Bull — languishing in fourth as a team — desperate to reassert themselves before season's end.
Weather & Conditions
Late October in central Texas typically delivers warm, dry afternoons with track temperatures in the mid-to-high 20s Celsius, though COTA is notorious for volatile conditions. Autumn cold fronts can sweep through with little warning, and the region has seen dramatic rain-affected weekends before. Teams will keep one nervous eye on the radar — a wet COTA would blow the strategic book wide open and hand chances to the brave.
Prediction
Our PickIt's hard to bet against Antonelli. The kid has been imperious, and a strong result here could see him mathematically close on the crown. But my tip for the standout drive of the weekend is Lewis Hamilton. COTA is his best track, the Ferrari has shown flashes of pace, and a proud champion racing on home-favourite soil with a point to prove is a dangerous combination.
Expect Antonelli to control the front — but don't be surprised if Hamilton spoils the party with a vintage Texas masterclass.
